Workout Review: 5-Minute Low-Impact Walking Exercise for Weight Loss at Home with Emily Daugherty

Sometimes, life hands you an open, sunny day, with plenty of time for a nice, long, refreshing walk outside. Sometimes, life hands you chaos and bad weather, as if it’s trying to make you give up on your walking routine. That’s why I’m a big fan of Walking Snacks, those quick walks that you can fit into your day to fit in extra steps. I’ve shared a whole but of ideas for different kinds of Walking Snacks, and I’ve even created a Walking Snacks Playlist to give you some songs that will help you get an extra 500 steps. But if you need a little help and encouragement to get some extra steps, you can try a five-minute walk-at-home workout on YouTube—like Emily Daugherty’s 5-Minute Low-Impact Walking Exercise for Weight Loss at Home.

This super-short walking workout features the instructor, a registered nurse and yoga teacher, in the middle of her cozy home, with her sleepy dog next to her on the couch. And that gives you an idea of the cozy workout to come. It’s a simple, basic workout—with no fancy timers or complicated move. It’s just four basic steps followed by a short cool-down—but I managed to get around 700 steps during that time.

If you prefer workouts with a laid-back yet encouraging vibe, you’ll definitely love this one. Emily isn’t an intense instructor who yells at you to push harder. There are no big, fake smiles, no Barbie doll perfection. She’s just a regular person whose encouragement and smiles feel genuine—as if she truly loves what she’s doing and is happy to have some friends to join her. And that friendly feel makes this the kind of video that I would definitely replay for a quick, low-pressure workout on a frantic day.

Pros:
– Super-quick way to fit steps into your day
– Low-key instructor, like walking with a friend
– Just a few moves, plus a quick cool-down
– Lower intensity for a more relaxing walk

Cons:
– Very basic—no countdown clocks, home setting
