A mother’s love can be all-encompassing—even before her child is born. And in the audio edition of You Did Nothing Wrong by author C.G. Drews, a single mom finds herself battling one challenge after another in her fight to protect the child she loves more than anything—and anyone—else.
The story finds young Australian single mom Elodie starting a new life in a new country with her son, Jude, after a whirlwind romance. Married to handsome, devoted Bren—with a new baby on the way—Elodie feels like everything is finally working out for her. But when Jude begins talking about the voices he hears in the walls of the old family home that Bren is renovating, Elodie starts to feel the eeriness, too—and she’ll do anything to hold on to her son and protect him from the danger that seems to be growing around them.
Elodie hasn’t had an easy life. After her little brother’s death, her parents completely shut her out—and though she hoped that Jude’s birth when she was just 16 would bring them back together, they shut him out, too. When she met Bren, she believed that she’d finally get that happily-ever-after that she’d worked so hard to find. But, once she follows Bren to the States, nothing goes as she expected. Jude struggles to adjust to their new life. Bren spends every spare minute working on the house. And there’s just something strange going on here—an eeriness that continues to build with each chapter.
There’s so much going on in this story—from Elodie’s dark past to the secrets that Bren seems to be keeping to whatever’s going on in this house. Each of these subplots could have made for a gripping thriller on its own—and the combination will definitely keep readers guessing. But the author tried to do too much—and, as a result, the finished product ends up feeling messy and chaotic and confusing. And when it comes to an end, readers still won’t understand what was really going on in the house—and who or what was to blame.
You Did Nothing Wrong is a story filled with secrets, lies, and most likely some supernatural creepiness, too. But with so many different conflicts and mysteries and storylines woven together, it feels unfocused and haphazard—an intriguing thriller that unfortunately never really figures out what kind of thriller it wants to be.
Pros:
– Suspenseful story to keep readers guessing
Cons:
– Too many storylines make for a messy story
– Can be dark and disturbing
– Sometimes gory
