Walking Snacks Challenge: Turn Everyday Moments into Extra Steps

Well, here we are again: staring down the calendar page with the big, bold word “MAY” at the top. For those of us with school-age kids, the thought of May (or, as some call it, “Maycember”) strikes terror in our hearts. It’s a month filled with the usual craziness (school schedules, practice, games, and more) plus the added end-of-school stuff (field trips, final projects, exams, fun days, permission slips, sigh-up forms, concerts, and parties)—and also planning for summer activities, camps, and more. If you took one look at my calendar for May, you might cry. I sometimes do.
These are the times of year that test our dedication and determination—when it’s so easy to put off walking because you’re just too busy. But what if you didn’t need the extra time for a long walk? What if you just needed to make better use of the time you’ve already got? And that’s what this month’s Walking Snacks Challenge is all about.
This month, we’re not worrying about long workouts or complicated plans. Instead, we’re using some real-life moments to get some extra movement.
What Are Walking Snacks?
Just like normal snacks are ways to fit in mini meals throughout your day to help you stay strong and energized, Walking Snacks are like mini walks sprinkled throughout your day to help you fit in more movement—even when you’re too busy to dedicate a whole hour or two to a longer walk.
Instead of changing into your favorite workout gear and driving to your favorite trail, you might walk while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew or add an extra loop around the parking lot or pace while you’re talking on the phone. They don’t seem like a big deal at the time—just multi-tasking…or maybe taking an extra minute or two to get some extra steps—but all of those little snacks during the day add up!

How Does the Walking Snacks Challenge Work?
This month’s challenge is a bingo-style challenge, so it works around your schedule and your routines for the month.
The challenge is simple: each square on the bingo card is one quick, easy Walking Snack. Save the bingo card shared here—or create your own—and cross off squares as you go.
You can work to complete a row (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) during the month—or even each week. Or you can go for the full blackout and fill in the whole card. It’s entirely up to you!
Remember: with these challenges, the goal is just to start where you are and challenge yourself to move more!
Want More Ideas?
I’ve included a whole lot of different options on the challenge bingo card provided. But if you want more ideas (or want to read more about how they work), check out these posts:

Why It Works
I don’t know about you, but I have multiple step-counters that stare me down all day, every day. I’ve got a step goal on my watch (which, admittedly, is set nice and low, so I can easily get that small win). I have apps like Winwalk and WeWard that give me points toward gift cards in exchange for more steps. I am always well aware when I haven’t gotten enough. But this challenge isn’t about hitting a specific step count. It’s about pushing yourself to move.
It’s about building consistency.
It’s about making movement a part of your daily life.
It’s about giving yourself a little bit of grace—so you’re not beating yourself up over missing out those long workouts when life gets crazy.
It’s about a couple of minutes of movement whenever you’ve got the time—because they add up a whole lot faster than you might think.
Make It Fun!
Need a little extra motivation? Come up with a small reward for completing a row. I absolutely recommend Dunkin iced coffee (large, obviously). But choose something that would be a small treat for you. You’re making a commitment to move a little more each and every day—and you deserve to be celebrated for it!
Want even more to celebrate? Track all of the walking snacks that you fit into a week! You’ll be even more proud of yourself when you see the effort you’ve made to keep moving!
Need some accountability (or competition)? Invite a friend to join you in the challenge! You can keep each other accountable—or compete to see who can fit in the most snacks!
Share Your Progress!
If you’ve decided to join in the challenge, we’d love to see your progress, so we can cheer you on along the way!

There are seasons in your life when the perfect walking routine just isn’t possible—like Maycember, when you might feel like you spend most days just scrambling to survive. But you don’t need the perfect routine to stay moving and make progress. Sometimes you just need to get creative! And that’s what this month’s challenge is designed to help you do.
