Workout Review: Turbo Power Walk with Paul Eugene

It’s always good to have a backup plan for your daily workout—and if you’re stuck at home for the day (whether it’s due to weather or a busy schedule or something else entirely), an indoor walking workout is a great way to go. But if you’re thinking that a YouTube workout would be an easy, relaxing way to get your daily walk in, you clearly haven’t tried Paul Eugene’s Turbo Power Walk workout.
This workout may be a part of the instructor’s 69th birthday celebration series of workouts, but don’t let his age fool you. Like the title suggests, this workout is incredibly fast-paced. The generic workout music is set to a 160 bpm pace—which comes to about a 12.5-minute mile. It’s fast—and it doesn’t slow down until the cool-down and stretching time at the end. So while the description suggests that you’ll get 3,000 steps in this 30-minute workout, I found it closer to 3,500.

The workout itself is pretty simple. It’s a lot of marching, with some basic moves thrown in from time to time. There are some heel touches and wide marches and the occasional upper body movements, too. But while some workouts are structured—with countdown clocks preparing you for each new move—this one is more random. There’s a countdown clock for the full workout, but the rest is up to the instructor’s whims.
In a lot of cases, I might get bored by the generic music and repetitive movements—but not in this case. I found myself smiling through the entire workout, thanks to the upbeat instructor. There’s just something so incredibly engaging about him—from his encouragement to his giggles to his frequent check-ins to ask “How did you do?” He proves that you don’t need a whole lot of flashy timers or picture-in-picture screens or complicated step combinations to keep people entertained and engaged if you’ve just got a fun personality.
After 30 minutes of walking with Paul Eugene, I was definitely sweaty and tired. This isn’t a workout for beginners. But it’s a great way to get some steps in—with a smile on your face. This is one instructor that I’ll definitely be working out with again in the future.
Pros:
– Simple steps
– Fast pace = high step count
– Incredibly upbeat instructor
– Finishes with cool-down and stretching
Cons:
– Might be too strenuous for beginners
– Not structured—no timers to tell you when you’re moving to the next steps
– Generic workout music
