I may live most of my life in leggings, but sometimes I reach for something else (at which point my daughter usually asks why I’m all dressed up). Sometimes, when the weather starts to get a little cooler in the fall (or during those in-between days in the spring), I’ll reach for a light second layer for extra wind protection over my leggings. Other times, I’ll head out for a summer hike and need a light layer to protect my legs from sun and tree branches. And that’s when I’ll reach for some hiking pants—like Coalatree’s Trailhead Pants.

The Trailhead Pants are made from breathable, water resistant ripstop nylon that’s lightweight and ready for almost any occasion. They feature four pockets—two front side pockets and two back pockets (one with Velcro closure)—for carrying extra items on your walk, though I would have liked a front pocket that’s more secure for my phone (preferably something with a zipper). They also have a drawstring waist and drawstring ankle ties, so you can adjust them to capri length (which I’ll probably do often, since they’re just a little bit short on my extra-long legs). Despite the slight swishiness of the fabric, though, these don’t look like the typical utility pants. They’re a style that you could wear on a hike or out shopping with friends.

Still, the fit of these pants was a little more fitted than I was expecting. I usually like a looser fit in my hiking pants—but while these don’t have that loose fit, they do have enough stretch to them that, despite being more fitted, they don’t feel uncomfortable. Really, the most uncomfortable thing about them is the itchy back tag—which I’ve been combating by wearing them over high-waist leggings.

If I’m heading out for a walk on a cool day and looking for a light and comfy extra layer, these might not be the first hiking pants that I’d reach for. But the more I’ve worn them, the more I’ve grown to like them. And if you’re looking for something with a little more style than the usual hiking pants, these could be a good pick.

Pros:
– Comfortable, lightweight fabric
– Packable (folds into front pocket)
– Four pockets for carrying things—including one Velcro back pocket to keep items secure

Cons:
– Fit seems to run a bit small
– No zipper pockets for most secure storage
– Itchy back tag
– Material is a little swishy
