5 Indoor Walking Workouts That Make Walking at Home Fun

A couple of weeks ago, we learned a little more about indoor walking workouts, taking a look at a bunch of things you might not have known about this highly-underrated option for getting some extra steps when leaving the house and hitting your favorite trail just isn’t an option.

If you decided to check out the indoor walking videos available on YouTube, you probably discovered that there’s an overwhelming number of options available—so many different instructors with so many different styles and lengths and formats of workouts. It’s…a lot. Fortunately, though, I’ve tried a whole lot of different workouts through the years—and I definitely have some that I enjoyed more than others. So if you’re interested in dipping your toe into walk-at-home workouts, here are a few suggestions to help you get started.

Leslie Sansone of Walk at Home

The Walk at Home channel is the OG of indoor walking workouts, creating content for more than 30 years—and Leslie Sansone is the OG of the Walk at Home channel. She’s been making videos like these for so long, in fact, that you can buy them on DVD. So if you’re interested in an old-school kind of workout that’s reminiscent of the aerobics videos of the Good Old Days, Leslie is your girl. She’s upbeat and motivational, and she incorporates different basic movements—and different muscles—into her workouts. And another benefit to her lengthy career as a walk-at-home instructor: you can find workouts on this channel that are suitable for every mood, whether you’re looking for a quick, family-friendly workout or a longer workout to get more steps.

Rick Bhullar of Get Fit with Rick

Leslie Sansone is great for a basic, old-school-style workout. But if you want to step it up a bit—and throw in some fun music in the process—Get Fit with Rick will kick up your indoor walking workout. Again, he has a number of different workouts available: different locations, different step counts, different music themes. Rick is a fun, upbeat instructor with a whole lot of fun, upbeat music for you to walk to—but keep in mind that he’s also a professional dancer, so if you’re like me, you might sometimes find yourself tripping over your two left feet.

Joanna Soh

In my search for my favorite indoor walking workouts, I’ve found such a wide variety. There are flashy videos with high production value, filmed in a professional studio, with timers and picture-in-picture videos to prepare viewers for upcoming steps. And there are simple videos with generic music and no bells and whistles, filmed in a corner of the instructor’s home. Joanna Soh falls somewhere in the middle. Her videos aren’t flashy or over-the-top—just Joanna, some generic music, and a simple backdrop. But she’s an upbeat instructor with easy-to-follow instructions and workouts that can be adjusted to fit your needs and fitness level.

Paul Eugene

If I’m having a rough day and just need someone to tell me everything’s going to be okay…if I need to boost my mood right along with my step count…that’s when I go straight to Paul Eugene. This high-energy instructor has been getting people moving since 1989—and while he may not be young and hip, that’s exactly why I love him. He’s a 70-year-old all-around fitness instructor who makes videos for every single kind of person—whether you want fast-paced walking workouts or seated HIIT workouts, inspiration music or oldies. No matter what you choose from his channel, you’ll get a great workout. Best of all, though, this instructor clearly loves what he does—and he wants you to love it, too. He laughs and motivates and encourages viewers through every single minute. And when you finish, you’ll feel strong and happy.

Angela at BPM

If you’ve got a walking pad or treadmill and want to do more than just walk while watching Netflix, this channel offers videos that make the same old walking workout feel like a night out at the club. You won’t be doing a lot of different steps or movements—you are, after all, on a walking pad—but the high-tempo music and high-energy instructor make these simple workouts surprisingly fun for something completely different.

If you’re new to walk-at-home workouts, you might not know what you’re looking for. Maybe you’ll start out looking for something classic and low-key, only to discover that you prefer something upbeat and challenging. Fortunately, there are so many different options! The options I’ve featured are just the beginning of the walking workout possibilities on YouTube—just a few different workouts to get you started. There really is something out there for everyone.

If you’ve found a workout (or an instructor) that you absolutely love, we’d love to hear about it! Be sure to share—so we can add them to our queue, too!

Kristin

Kristin has been hitting the trail (or the treadmill) for a walk almost every day for the past several years, and she recently completed her first half marathon. She loves sunny fall days, cushy walking shoes, and coconut caramel iced coffee from Dunkin.
