Staying hydrated on walks is so important. No matter what the temperature outside, we need to keep replenishing those all-important fluids. So whenever I hit the trail (or the treadmill…or the mall…) I always bring along some kind of water bottle. I’ve seen all kinds on the trail—from big, heavy stainless steel tumblers to disposable bottles—but I know myself well enough to know that I would drop a regular water bottle (probably repeatedly). So I have a collection of everything from hydration vests to waist packs to my Nathan SpeedShot Plus handheld flask.
This handheld water bottle is great for everyday walks. It straps around your hand (with an adjustable strap) and stays in place—so you can keep your water handy without needing to worry about accidentally dropping it during your walk. As long as you screw on the cap the right away, the bottle doesn’t leak—and the spout is perfect for drinking while moving.
The best feature, though, is the included zipper pouch. Not only does it hold the bottle to your hand, but it holds the small necessities, too. While it isn’t big enough to hold my phone, it can hold everything from keys to AirPods to personal safety devices. Mine fits my car key, lip balm, an extra ponytail holder, some cash, and a couple of tissues, along with my pepper spray and personal alarm.
Of course, it does have a couple of down sides, too. Though the bottle is supposed to be insulated, it doesn’t seem to keep water cold for much longer than any other bottle—so I recommend adding a few ice cubes on warmer days. I’ve also found that holding it in my hand while walking makes my hand sweat more than usual—so I end up moving it back and forth from one hand to the other. If you’re looking for an easy, hands-free option with a larger carrying capacity, then, you might prefer a waist pack—especially for longer walks. But for your daily walk on the trail, the Nathan SpeedShot Plus is a great choice.
Pros:
– Easy to hold—stays in place
– Adjustable strap fits all size hands (and even gloved hands in the winter)
– Handy zipper pouch for small essentials
– Leak-proof
– Lightweight
Cons:
– Insulation doesn’t seem to make much of a difference
– 12-ounce capacity might not be enough for longer walks or really hot days
– Will make your hand extra sweaty
– Zipper pouch isn’t big enough for phones
Though my version of this flask looks slightly different, you can find a similar version on Amazon.
