Before I became a walker, socks were little more than a necessary evil: something to keep my feet warm or to keep my shoes from getting sweaty and stinky. When I started walking every day, however, I became a sock connoisseur. Now I’m pickier about the fit and the cushion and the comfort—and I have both my favorite luxury socks (my Balega UltraGlides) and my favorite everyday budget socks (from Five Below).
On a recent back-to-school shopping trip to Sierra, I was excited to find that the sock section had been stocked with great socks that were actually my size. And while I was grabbing some Balegas for a low-low price, a package of Saucony socks also caught my eye. The Saucony Inferno Quarter Socks come in a pack of three pairs for about the same price as one pair of my beloved Balegas—and since I do love a good deal (and also because they seemed soft and cushy)—I decided to give them a try.
The first thing I noticed when I put on my new Saucony socks was the seamless toe. I am one of those people who just can’t function when my toe seam is in the wrong place, so I loved not needing to worry about a seam. I also loved the comfortable padding of these socks. They’re cushioned without being too thick and heavy, and they hugged my feet in all the right places.
My one issue with these socks, however, is the quarter height. While I am aware that no-show socks just aren’t cool anymore, I am old enough that I don’t care. I prefer my socks to be just long enough to prevent my shoes from rubbing on bare spots on my feet and creating blisters. These seem to be a strange compromise between the old person’s no-show socks and the Gen Z crew socks. And though they don’t slide down like crew socks sometimes do, they do cause some awkward tan lines.
Still, if the length of the sock is my greatest complaint, I’ll take it. The Saucony Infernos are comfortable socks at a good price (at least as far as brand name running socks are concerned). So if you’re in the market for some new socks (and you don’t mind some funky tan lines), they’re worth picking up.
Pros:
– Seamless toes
– Lower price point than most running socks
– Soft, breathable fabric
– Cushioned without being bulky
Cons:
– Quarter height makes for strange tan lines
