Summer is almost here! For the next few months, the weather will be warm and sunny, the kids will be home from school, and calendars are filled with camps and family activities and vacations. If you’re planning a summer getaway this year, there’s a pretty good chance that some walking will be involved—whether you’ll be exploring a new city, strolling through a fun coastal town, or even planning dedicated days for walking scenic trails at a park. No matter where your summer travels take you, you’ll want to have just the right supplies packed for a day of walking—so today we’re taking a look at everything you’ll need to pack in your travel walking bag.

The Essentials

There are just some things that you can’t leave home without—the basic gear that’s absolutely vital for any walking adventure during the summer. Be sure to put these items at the top of your packing list.

Walking Shoes
The wrong pair of shoes can turn an otherwise enjoyable hike along a scenic seaside trail into an afternoon of agony. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes that won’t hurt your feet!

As you pack your walking bag, consider where you’ll be walking. If you’re sticking to paved paths, a nice, light-weight pair of walking shoes with plenty of cushioning will keep your feet feeling comfy all day long. But if you’re going to be wandering off the beaten path, be sure to pack something with traction, so your feet won’t lose their grip on gravel trails and dusty inclines.

No matter which shoes are best for your travel plans, be sure to break them in before you go! New shoes can cause blisters—and they might turn out to be less comfortable than you thought—so put some miles on your walking shoes before packing them in your travel bag.

Breathable Clothing
Pack the clothing that you’d normally throw on for a walk at home: lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking clothes will keep you comfortable, no matter where your walking takes you. It’s always wise to pack some layers, too—because even if you’re traveling during the warmer months, those early mornings and later evenings can get chilly!

Water Bottle
Hydration is always important when you’re out walking for any amount of time—and it’s even more important during the hot summer months. There are all kinds of options (I discuss a few of them here), but you’ll want to keep in mind the length of your walk, the conditions (shaded or full sun), and how you’ll transport your water when choosing what to bring. I usually bring a waist pack (like this popular one from Fitletic) to carry my water bottle. You might also want to consider an insulated bottle for keeping your water cold. Or, if you want to save space in your bag, pick up a collapsible bottle that will take up less room as you go.

Sun Protection
Even if you’re tackling more shaded trails, it’s good to be prepared. Pack sunscreen and lip balm with SPF protection—and be sure to have travel sizes to keep in your pack for reapplying. You’ll also want to throw in a packable sun hat and/or some polarized sunglasses (like my beloved goodrs, of course) to protect your head from burning and your eyes from squinting in the bright sunlight.

Phone
I know that most of us never go anywhere without our phones, but this is just your reminder to bring your phone on your walking adventures. Not only is it important in case of emergencies, but it comes complete with maps to help you find your way and a camera to let you capture every moment. If you’re heading off the beaten path—where coverage might be spotty—be sure to download your maps in advance.

ID
When you’re traveling, it’s important to keep your ID, health insurance information, and other travel information safe. Be sure to pack these things in a safe, secure place while you’re walking.

Longer Walk Extras

If you’re planning to walk for more than just an hour or so, you’ll want to throw in some extra items in your pack to keep you energized and comfortable on your journey.

Snacks
For long walks, it’s important to have some high-energy snacks on hand to keep you going. I like to keep things like protein bars or trail mix with me, so I can refuel when my energy starts to fade. They’re small and easily portable, so I don’t have to worry about finding a lot of extra room for them. If it’s an extra hot day, you might also want to pack some extra electrolyte mix to pour into your water bottle, so you can replenish your fluids on the go.

Power Bank
I’ve already mentioned that a phone is essential gear for walking—but if you’re heading out for a while, be sure to come prepared with extra juice for that computer in your pocket. Apps can drain your battery—so be sure to have backup power ready.

First Aid
Even if you’ve broken in those walking shoes, you never know when you might need a band-aid. Pack some for the road—and maybe throw in some pain-relievers, just in case, too.

Hiking Poles
If you’re going to be exploring hills and unpaved trails, some ultra-light collapsible walking poles can help you keep your balance on uneven trails. (Take a look at these.)

Other Extras

Rain Gear
You never know what kind of weather you’ll face on your walk. So you might want to pack a small, foldable umbrella and/or a light rain jacket in case of a sudden downpour. And a small, quick-dry towel can help with drying off both sweat and water from those unexpected showers.

Hand Sanitizer and Wipes
Walks can get messy—whether you’re on the trail or on the city streets. Having wipes and hand sanitizer with you can help you quickly clean up messes—and clean your hands when it’s time for a snack.

Mini Notebook
I often find that ideas come to me more often while I’m walking—so it’s good to have a mini notebook and pen with you. You can take notes on your journey and your experiences—or write down those important thoughts or ideas that pop into your mind along the way.

Once you’re gotten all of the essentials (and maybe some important extras) packed, you’re ready to get out there and explore somewhere new! Whether you’re exploring a new town or hiking through the countryside, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Where are you planning to walk this summer? What are you packing in your travel pack?

Kristin has been hitting the trail (or the treadmill) for a walk almost every day for the past several years, and she recently completed her first half marathon. She loves sunny fall days, cushy walking shoes, and coconut caramel iced coffee from Dunkin.
