There’s definitely a reason why vendor booths at race expos hand out complimentary tubes of lip balm—and I never pass up a free tube of lip balm. You’ll find them in all of my walking packs, gear bags, toiletry bags, and purses. After all, whether you’re hitting the trail on cold, blustery days or in the heat of summer, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up with chapped lips. Mine get so bad—especially during the winter months—that, no matter how much lip balm I apply, there’s just not enough moisture to heal the rough, dry skin around the outside edges of my lips. And that can be so frustrating—not to mention embarrassing.

The Kalos Co. Tallow Lip Mask was designed to relieve dry, chapped lips like mine. It’s 100% natural, made in small batches on a family farm in California, using ingredients like lanolin, locally-sourced beeswax, essential oils, and grassfed beef tallow. While some lip products feel thick and heavy and sticky, this one does not. It’s soft and smooth with a lightly glossy look, and it feels like it starts working as soon as it’s applied—and it has a light scent (mine is mint, though it’s also available in vanilla) that just adds to the spa-like feel.

When I started using the lip mask, my lips were in bad shape. The cold, dry winter weather had absolutely wreaked havoc on my poor lips, and they were rough around the edges. But within a day or two (even with my tendency to bite my lip when I’m concentrating) they were so much softer. I apply some every night before I head to bed—to let the mask work its magic overnight—as well as once or twice during the day, and I don’t feel the need to reach for my regular lip balm throughout the day, as I once did.

Admittedly, the price is quite a bit higher than a pack of ChapStick, but it’s worth the splurge—especially if your lips need some extra TLC. Fortunately, a little bit goes a long way, so a tube should keep your lips feeling soft and healthy for a nice, long time.

Pros:
– Natural ingredients
– Light scent
– Not heavy or sticky
– Great for healing weather-worn lips

Cons:
– Higher price point
– Use of animal-based products—not vegan-friendly
