Question of the Day: Long Walks

Many of us make a point of walking several times a week – maybe even daily. Those everyday walks are so important for our physical and mental wellbeing. But today we’re talking about the special walks. Those extra-long walks tend to have a story behind them. Maybe it was a long and tiring day at an amusement park. Maybe it was a planned marathon (or something longer). Maybe you just lost track of time. Maybe (like my walking buddy Kristin), you had a destination in mind, and the distance ended up being more than you planned.

Ironically, my story also involves Kristin. Just a couple of months ago, we participated in the Queen Bee Half Marathon together. We were so excited about the race – and due to various circumstances, we’d been training together for almost two years to make it happen. Now when you think about a half marathon, that 13.1-mile distance seems like a lot. But then you need to consider the extras: the walk from the car to the starting line, the walk around the after party once you finish the race, and the walk back to the car after it’s all over. But if you happen to forget where you parked the car – and you happen to be in a city that’s not your own – that distance can be even farther than you were thinking. After we left the after party, we realized that we really had no idea where we’d left the car, and we ended up wandering all over Cincinnati in search of it.

In the end, when we finally located the car, we realized that, had we just left the after party a different way, we would have been right next to our parking lot. And then we just sat and had a good laugh about it.

So how long was my longest walk? I have no idea, but I know that we were definitely over 15 miles by the time we made it to the car – but probably farther.

What’s your story?

Kristin

Kristin has been hitting the trail (or the treadmill) for a walk almost every day for the past several years, and she recently completed her first half marathon. She loves sunny fall days, cushy walking shoes, and coconut caramel iced coffee from Dunkin.
