A couple of years ago, I received a packet of Pedialyte AdvancedCare Plus in a race packet. Since I tend to stick to the old “nothing new on race day” rule, I stuck with my trusty water on race day, but one of my walking buddies didn’t obey the rule. As we were making our way along the course, I heard her yell out, “Ugh!” I turned to see if she was okay, and she was making a face. “Did you guys try this hydration mix? It’s gross!”

When I finally worked up the courage to try my own packet of the mix, I didn’t really disagree with her. Though the smell of the Berry Frost powder brought back memories of the Berry Blue Kool-Aid of my childhood, the flavor is incredibly strong when mixed with the recommended 16 ounces of water—and there’s a strange aftertaste to it.

Since then, I’ve learned to mix my hydration packets with extra water to tone down the flavor. I usually mix mine with a full liter of water—which is twice the recommended amount. It’s still pretty strong, but it’s not nearly as overpowering—and the strange aftertaste isn’t as noticeable.

Meanwhile, after years of producing electrolyte drinks for kids, Pedialyte knows a thing or two about hydration—and I appreciate the fact that this mix reportedly contains 33% more electrolytes than the average sports drink (and even more than a regular bottle of Pedialyte). I also appreciate the fact that it contains prebiotics—because who couldn’t use a little boost in their gut health?

While the overwhelming flavoring of this mix keeps it from being high on my list of electrolyte mixes, I’ve definitely had worse. And if you can handle the flavor, the benefits make it worth trying.
