Workout Review: Fast Walking Workout with Intervals #27 by Kat Gates-Buettner

Every once in a while, I come across a recommendation for a walk-at-home workout on YouTube, and I just have to check it out. And after seeing Kat Gates-Buettner’s name pop up a number of times, I decided to try her Fast Walking Workout with Intervals (#27). And now I understand why she came so highly recommended.

The weather outside may not be ideal for a walk on your favorite trail right now, but you can get your steps inside but feel like you’re outside in the wintery weather when you join this workout. For this 32-minute walking workout, Kat and her workout partner don their warm workout gear for an outdoor walking workout. The setting here is definitely different from the typical generic indoor workout space. It’s all on the waterfront, with massive mansions in the background.

But while the wintery outdoor setting may make you feel a chill as the video begins, it won’t be long before you’re breaking a sweat. This “fast walking workout” doesn’t just move at a somewhat brisk pace—it moves. A step-counting watch can never really give an accurate count for a walk-at-home workout—due to the different arm movements—and mine put me at around two miles (which is around 4,000 steps). But if you’re really getting the advertised 4,500 steps during this 32-minute workout, that puts it at a speedy 14:17 pace. So if you’re looking for a nice, easy beginning walking workout, you might want to look elsewhere. This one isn’t for beginners.

Fortunately, though, there’s nothing especially complicated about the moves here. Most of the steps are the basics: marches and touches and grapevines with some jabs and hooks thrown in for your arms. There are some combinations, but Kat does a great job of adding moves gradually, so you won’t get too lost in the process—and there’s a picture-in-picture to give you a preview for the next move. And even though there aren’t any spoken instructions to guide you, anyone who’s somewhat experienced at this kind of video will be able to follow along without much of a problem.

After this 32-minute video, you definitely will feel like you’ve gotten a good workout. It’s energetic and upbeat—a great video for those days when you just can’t (or don’t want to) get outside for your daily walk. I’ll definitely be coming back to this channel to check out more of Kat’s workouts.
