Some people are religious about their morning protein shake. After (or before) their daily workout, they mix up a protein drink to help with recovery and muscle repair. While I’ve never been one to drink protein shakes every day, I’ll often start race mornings with a protein shake…or I’ll add a little protein powder to my overnight oats…or I’ll mix up a little bit of protein after my walk. But it’s not always easy to find a protein option that’s affordable and tasty without a chalky texture—so I’m always eager to try out a new brand or flavor to see if it lives up to my standards.

When FlavCity recently sponsored a Strava challenge, I was excited to complete the challenge and get a trial pack of protein shake packets to try—and, since I typically follow up my daily walk with my morning iced coffee, I was especially eager to try the Butter Coffee flavor.

Each serving of FlavCity’s protein smoothies is packed with 25g of grass-fed whey protein and 10g of collagen per serving. The Butter Coffee flavor also includes caffeine to help you charge into the rest of your day. It’s easy to mix up, too: just add pour 12 ounces of your favorite milk (or water—but I used milk) into a shaker bottle, add a scoop of mix (or empty out the single-serving packet), and shake it up. While other mixes can be clumpy or chalky, that’s not the case here. It’s smooth and easy to mix.

Unfortunately, my issue was with the flavor. Though I’ve seen a number of positive reviews praising the taste, I found it to be a strange mix of sweet and earthy—with almost a burnt butterscotch aftertaste. After doing a little more research, I realized that it contains reishi powder—which is a kind of mushroom—along with cordyceps powder, which is another kind of fungus. This could account for the earthy flavor—and since I have yet to find a mushroom beverage that I really like, it could also explain why I didn’t exactly enjoy drinking it.

I really like the idea of this protein mix, but Butter Coffee isn’t the flavor for me. But I’ll keep trying others to see if I can find one that works for my mushroom-averse taste buds.

Pros:
– Contains 33% of your daily recommended protein
– Clean, organic ingredients
– Easy to mix
– Smooth texture

Cons:
– Quite pricey ($59.99 for a 20-serving package)
– Mushroom powders give it an earthy taste
– Strange aftertaste

You can find FlavCity’s protein smoothies and other products on their website or on Amazon.
