Hydration Review: PurAqua Coconut Hydration + Electrolytes

In my ongoing search for the perfect hydration mix, I’ve found that I keep going back to Aldi for their PurAqua Hydration packets. At some point over the summer, I heard that the store was offering a special edition bomb pop-flavored mix (just like Liquid I.V., coincidentally), and I started looking for it each time I stopped at an Aldi—to the point that it almost became an addiction. It was bad, guys. But then—finally!—I happened to glance at the hydration mixes on a grocery trip, and I saw one single box of the special Red, White, & Blue flavor in PurAqua Coconut Hydration + Electrolytes. I hadn’t tried the Coconut Hydration option—but since I was dying to try the new flavor, I grabbed it before someone else could.

While the nutrition information on the regular PurAqua Hydration packets seems to line up pretty closely with Liquid I.V., the Coconut Hydration is different: fewer calories, fewer carbs, less sodium, but higher in a number of vitamins. The price is also slightly higher than the regular hydration packets.

As for the flavor: it’s definitely there. As I’ve mentioned before, I tend to water down my hydration mixes, but this one still had a whole lot of summery bomb pop flavor—even after I mixed it with a full liter of water. And while there’s a hint of that low-sugar aftertaste, it didn’t really bother me.

What did bother me, though: the grittiness. After finishing off my first bottle, I set it aside to be washed, only to discover later that some of the powder had stayed behind—and was dried onto the bottom of my bottle (and I still haven’t been able to get it out). After finishing off my second bottle—and getting that last mouthful of grit—I noticed that the side of my bottle was covered in powder. It clearly has something to do with the coconut—but if you’re sensitive to textures, you might have an issue with this mix.

All things considered, I still prefer the regular PurAqua Hydration—and I’ll keep stocking up. But I do love this special edition flavor—and if they continue to release more flavors like this, I’ll probably pick them up for the occasional treat.
