Workout Review: 30 Minute Walking Workout by Body Kind Fitness

I’ve often said that it’s good to have plenty of options in your walker’s bag of tricks—because you never know when you’ll need a backup plan. On one rainy morning, I went downstairs to hop on the treadmill for a quick walk, and it started making some scary noises. So I made a quick transition from Netflix to YouTube and pulled up the 30 Minute Walking Workout by Body Kind Fitness.
This half-hour walk-at-home workout is pretty simple—just a single instructor on a platform overlooking the water. The workout consists of a variety of different steps in 30-second intervals, with a countdown clock in the corner—and a quick picture-in-picture preview of the next move before it begins. Most of the moves are different, though the instructor sometimes goes back to some of the basic moves—like walking in place or step-touches. Some of the moves, however, feel awkward—like a strange combination of arm and leg movements that the instructor came up with, just to add some variety. Often, though, I would just do my own thing during these times—or walk in place.

The soundtrack is generic workout music, but the video doesn’t seem to have been filmed using the same music. The steps are rarely to the beat—which can be frustrating for those of us who get caught up in the beat. When the music says one thing and the instructor is doing something else, it can be confusing.
The instructor also doesn’t speak during the video. I feel like your opinion of that may depend on your own personal preferences—and the instructor’s personality—but I prefer a little bit of encouragement and motivation during my walks. And instead of talking, the instructor here just smiles unnaturally and occasionally mimes some communication—and that just feels awkward.
The video’s description claims that it’s a 5,000-step workout, but my watch tracked more like 4,000—and that included the steps I took during the lengthy ad breaks—but that’s still a good number of steps for a 30-minute workout. Still, there were a number of frustrating factors in this workout—so it’s not one that I’m likely to try again.
Pros:
– Variety of moves
– Scenic views
Cons:
– No spoken instructions
– Some moves seem awkward
– Doesn’t step to the beat
– Instructor seems upbeat but uncomfortable
– Lots of ads
