Summer is definitely heating up; it seems like we went from cool and comfortable on my morning walk to hot and humid in a matter of days. And it’s become more and more important to replenish those electrolytes after a sweaty walk on the trail. So I’ve been taking to the pantry post-walk to mix up some of the different hydration packets in my electrolyte arsenal—like the old standby, Liquid I.V.

Recently, I tried the brand’s sugar-free version and found it to be surprisingly flavorful and low on aftertaste, so I decided to go back and revisit the original. I’ve always found Liquid I.V.’s hydration options to be refreshing—a great way to rehydrate on hot days. And the Lemon-Lime flavor that I tried was definitely refreshing. There’s something about a citrusy flavor that always feels cool and fresh and even energizing. Add to that a whole bunch of added vitamins and electrolytes, and it just feels good to drink it.

Still, I was surprised to find that I liked the sugar-free version more. While both had plenty of flavor—without being overpowering—the original seemed to have more of an aftertaste than the sugar-free. While it tasted fresh and fruity, there’s something about it that feels somewhat artificial.

There’s definitely a reason why Liquid I.V. seems to be the standard for hydration packets. Not only is it available at a whole lot of online and brick-and-mortar stores, but it’s also refreshing and packed with electrolytes—and, as an added bonus, the price tends to be lower than a lot of other brands. But while most sugar-free mixes tend to have more of an artificial aftertaste, I actually prefer the sugar-free Liquid I.V. to the original.
