For quite a while now, my favorite electrolyte mix has come from Aldi. I’m a big fan of the grocery chain’s products and (especially) their prices—and I was excited to find that they had hydration mixes for an amazing price. But then, gradually, several months ago, my old mix started to disappear—and it was replaced by a new mix that had a higher price for fewer packets. Whenever I saw the old ones in a store, I’d stock up. But, eventually, I knew it was time to give the new mixes a try.

The new PurAqua hydration mixes offer three times the electrolytes of the average sports drink and 50% less sugar—both good things in my book. They also provide five essential vitamins—including Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin B6.

These mixes come in three different flavors, but I decided to start with strawberry. As I’ve mentioned before, I prefer a lighter flavor—instead of a strong sports drink flavor—so I mixed mine with twice the recommended amount of water. It still had plenty of flavor—and though it has a slight aftertaste (as is often the case with hydration mixes), it isn’t strong or off-putting.

Since I still have a box of the old-style PurAqua mix left, I did a quick comparison—and the new version seems to be more: more calories, more sodium, more carbs, more vitamins. Actually, after a quick search online, I found that the numbers are much closer to those of Liquid I.V.—at less than a third of the price. So while I may miss my old Aldi hydration, I’m impressed by my new Aldi hydration. It isn’t quite as cheap, but it appears to be an upgrade from the original—at a price that’s still a bargain.

Calories per Serving: 45
Sodium: 510mg
Total Carbs: 11g
Price: $2.99 for 6 (50 cents per packet)

Pros:
– More affordable than most electrolyte mixes
– Good flavor with minimal aftertaste

Cons:
– Pricier than the original PurAqua hydration mix

You can find PurAqua Hydration with Electrolytes at Aldi stores or online on Amazon.
