For many of us (myself included), sleep doesn’t always come easy. I’ve always been a night person, so my body doesn’t start to wind down until around 2 a.m.—but, unfortunately, the world doesn’t run on a night person’s schedule, so I often end up forcing myself to go to bed before my body feels ready. And since a good night’s sleep is so very important, I often find myself trying new things to help me get to sleep and get the rest I need—like the TheraICE sleep mask.

The typical sleep mask helps you sleep by blocking out light while signaling to your brain that it’s time for sleep. But the TheraICE sleep mask goes a step beyond that. Instead of simply covering your eyes to block out light, it also includes a cooling gel that, when placed in the freezer for at least an hour before bedtime, can offer additional cooling comfort while also reducing those dark circles under your eyes.

I’ve never been a sleep mask person—because I assumed that I’d be irritated by having something on my face—but I haven’t found that to be much of a problem here. The mask is shaped with an open design to fit over your eyes without pressing into them. The cooling gel is shaped around the outside of the mask, offering a little bit of relaxing weight right along with that cooling relaxation. I wasn’t sure if the cold gel would keep me awake instead of helping me sleep, but it’s been surprisingly relaxing—and when I ended up with a days-long migraine recently, it helped soothe my aching head, too. So I now make a point of putting my mask in the freezer every evening, so it will be ready at bedtime.

It didn’t take long to sell me on this sleep mask. Not only does it make the room feel pitch-black (even if my husband’s reading light is still shining in my direction), but the smart design and cooling gel help me relax at the end of the day—and, on most nights, I find myself getting to sleep much faster than before.

The only issue that I’ve had with this mask is that, as a side sleeper, I find that it can be big and awkward when I’m sleeping on my side—and it end up needing to adjust it in the middle of the night. For that reason, I sometimes remove it—but, by then, it’s done its job of getting me to settle into sleep.

If you struggle with getting to sleep at night—if lights or distractions or even headaches tend to keep you awake—this cooling, calming sleep mask is worth adding to your nighttime routines.

Pros:
– Soft fabric
– Curved eye covering won’t smash your eyes
– Cooling gel is comfortable and great for those dark circles

– Can be awkward for side sleepers
