Race Review: 2025 New Albany Walking Classic

While some walkers prefer to stick to the trail, walking on their own—or maybe with a friend—I love participating in the occasional race. I love the energy of the crowd and the swag and the after party. And while I was originally concerned that I’d stand out in the sea of runners, I soon found that people walk races all the time.

While I’ve enjoyed all kinds of races through the years, though, there’s one race that stands out as a must-do for anyone who loves the walk: the New Albany Walking Classic.

The Walking Classic is a walking-only event that takes place every September in New Albany, Ohio. This well-run, well-organized 21-year-old event kicks off with packet pickup, where participants receive some of the best swag I’ve gotten from any race. This year’s item was a soft full-zip jacket that I know will be an item that I regularly reach for—both for chilly-weather walks and casual days, too.

The race itself takes place on a Sunday morning, exploring the pristine suburban streets. While most race mornings result in long waits in traffic and a struggle to find parking, the parking here is plentiful, free, and just steps from the action, where the vibe is upbeat and energetic.

The event is divided into two categories: competitive and general, with both 5k and 10k options. Paths are clearly marked, and there are plenty of volunteers along the way to cheer racers on and point them in the right direction. There are cheerleaders and DJs and even a brass band to keep everyone moving. I even had one adorable little girl run right up to me to make sure I got a cup of Gatorade.

Once the race is over, there’s a fun after-party—and the small square near the finish line is loaded with sponsors handing out pizza and sliders and ice cream and bagels (and, of course, bananas). Everyone wanders around, taking pictures and enjoying the atmosphere before packing up and heading home.

There are definitely so many reasons why the Walking Classic is my favorite event of the year—not the least of which is that it’s just for walkers. It’s a celebration of us. And that alone makes it worth coming back year after year for a stroll through New Albany on a Sunday morning in September.

Pros:
– Walkers only!
– High-quality swag
– Lots of free parking right by the start/finish line
– Fun after party
– Scenic course
– Well-organized

Cons:
– No longer includes a half-marathon option

Kristin has been hitting the trail (or the treadmill) for a walk almost every day for the past several years, and she recently completed her first half marathon. She loves sunny fall days, cushy walking shoes, and coconut caramel iced coffee from Dunkin.
