Now that summer is here—and the temperatures have risen to sometimes ridiculous levels—it’s time to pay even closer attention to hydration. I never leave home without some kind of water bottle—and walks call for some kind of bottle or pack and an extra bottle waiting back at the car. But sometimes you just need a little more than just water.

Hydration mixes can definitely be pricey—but you can pick up Pure Kick Hydrate at your neighborhood Dollar Tree for just $1.25 for a package of 6 (or on Amazon in larger packages). They come in a number of different flavors, though, of course, that depends on your local store’s availability. When I picked mine up, the Strawberry Watermelon was the only flavor available.

Pure Kick hydration mixes are available in both Hydrate and Energy. Personally, I prefer to skip the energy drinks, so I chose to go with Hydrate and was surprised to find references to caffeine on the packaging. When I checked the ingredients, however, caffeine wasn’t listed—so I’m not entirely sure whether it actually contains caffeine—though, from the way I felt after drinking it, I suspect there’s caffeine here. So if you’re keeping an eye on your caffeine intake, you might want to skip this one, just in case.

When it comes to the flavor, while I normally add a whole lot more water than recommended to my hydration mixes, this one isn’t nearly as strong as most of the others I’ve tried. The fruity flavor is light, but the sugar-free aftertaste is strong. In fact, the artificial-flavored aftertaste often overpowers the rest of the fruit flavor.

When it comes to hydration mixes, Pure Kick’s Hydrate may fall into the “you get what you pay for” category. If you’re just looking for some extra electrolytes to help keep you hydrated during those hot summer walks, you’ll get the extra vitamins and minerals here. But it may not be as effective—or taste as good—as some of the others.
