Question of the Day: Virtual Races

Participating in an in-person race can be so much fun: the crowds, the energy, the scenery, the post-race party. But a virtual race can sometimes be a great motivator to walk those extra miles!

It’s been almost four years since my first virtual race. While we were on lockdown during the pandemic, I discovered virtual races and talked a couple of my friends into signing up for one with me. We chose to complete a 5k on the same day, from our own homes – and then we shared pictures of our post-race medal ceremony. There was just something about tracking the mileage and celebrating with a little bling that made me feel really good about getting up and putting in the miles.

Still, I think my favorite virtual race was the Santa Hustle. I met up with a couple of friends – Kate and Melissa – on an especially warm Christmas Eve afternoon (it was in the 50s!), and we put on our matching Santa hats and jackets and completed our 5k through Kate’s neighborhood. Not only did WE have fun, but the neighbors definitely found it entertaining, too!

What about you? Have you tried a virtual race? Which one was YOUR favorite?
