Question of the Day: What’s Your Average?

When I started my walking routine, more than four years ago, I started with something that I could manage. After my daughter got on the bus and my husband left for work, I’d get on the treadmill and walk for just a little while – starting with a mile. Gradually, I built it up, increasing my distance and walking a little bit faster.

When the pandemic hit, I tackled my first virtual 5k. It was a big deal. But I kept building. When my daughter spent two years at home, attending online school, we had easier school days on Fridays, so I’d do 5k Fridays. And that was a pretty big deal.

Now, the couple of miles that I used to push myself to walk in the morning is an easy evening stroll. And that 5k is the bare minimum for a morning walk. Depending on which trail I choose in the morning, I typically fit in 4-5 miles before heading back to work.

Each of us is at a different point in our journey. We all have different abilities, different goals, and different schedules. So what’s your typical walk? Do you have a regular time or distance that you try to fit in, or does it just vary by the day?

Kristin has been hitting the trail (or the treadmill) for a walk almost every day for the past several years, and she recently completed her first half marathon. She loves sunny fall days, cushy walking shoes, and coconut caramel iced coffee from Dunkin.
